Vintage Glamour for Brighton Festival 2016
April 19, 2016
Lobster Lady Melissa Mclure and her 20lb crustacean* are leading the pack of 40s and 50s glamour girls from the George Douglas Archive who are appearing at the 2016 Brighton Festival fringe in May.
From 30 April till 29 May, the Brighton Photography gallery in the new West Pier Arches is showcasing a glorious selection of these recent finds from the archive’s lighter side. They will be on display alongside many of the classic pictures which made international headlines when George’s collection was first discovered in 2014.
George loved to photograph feisty women looking that little bit different as you can see from the way he casually accessorizes actress Melissa, a stuntwoman for Hollywood Westerns, with a giant lobster.
His quirky fashion pictures appeared in a huge range of magazines including Harper’s Bazaar, Esquire, Picture Post, Life, TV Mirror and Woman.
Come and check out the pick of the bunch if you’re lucky enough to be able to get to Brighton any time in May.
• Finn Hopson, owner of the Brighton Photography gallery, produced the beautiful prints for our original exhibition in 2014 and a hugely successful 2015 exhibition at Les Rencontres d’Arles, France’s biggest photo festival, in 2015. This year a selection of archive-stamped prints produced by Finn will be on sale for the first time in Brighton.
* We know it was a 20lb lobster. George recorded its weight on the photoshoot notes!
